Bishop Chad's Personal Coat of Arms
The shield is blue and gold, the colours representing the chief sacraments of Holy Baptism and the Holy Eucharist. The shield has been divided in three parts using the Gothic arch (counterchanged) which alludes to +Chad's interest in church architecture but also his work building up and preserving the Church. Above each arch is a cross: the middle reminds us of Christ, and the two others remind us of the criminals crucified with Him on Calvary. Set upon the arches (counterchanged) are three ears of wheat, which allude to +Chad's past as the grandson of a farmer, his first profession as a baker, but also his work as a priest – wheat being a strong symbol used throughout the Holy Scriptures. The middle ear has thirteen seeds reminding us of the Twelve Apostles with Christ. The other ears have seven seeds representing the seven days, seven Churches ,the seven sacraments etc. The whole design emphasizes the Holy Trinity with the use of threes. The motto below, “Christ Crux est Mea Lux” means “the cross of Christ is my light.”
